Pacific Oysters (Gigas)
Pacific Oysters (Gigas)
We stock Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas)(Oisre) also known as cupped or rock oysters which were introduced into Ireland in the early 1970’s to help in the decline of the native oyster production. The Gigas (Crassostrea gigas), is an oval frilly-shelled Pacific oyster and is now the main species in Ireland – cultivated by about 200 enterprises in 11 coastal counties.
Gigas have a great taste of their own that is enjoyed either plain or with the addition of sharp flavourings such as lemon, vinegar, or even Tabasco. While usually consumed raw in the half shell, Gigas oysters are also great smoked, deep fried, roasted, steamed and even baked.
